Fortune Hotel

Our expectations were already low, but the room was still filthy and unacceptable. The door was broken and couldn’t be secured. The receptionist didn’t seem to want to talk to us and didn’t know English, as far as I could tell. It wasn’t even cheap for a room like this. Avoid it.

The location is good and the price is cheap, but the bathroom was so bad my family avoided using it and went to McDonald’s or the malls instead. The toilet wouldn’t flush unless we brought water, and sewer water sometimes came up through the drain. The bathroom was dirty overall. When we arrived, the elevators were broken, so we carried our luggage up and down and had to climb five floors whenever we went out. The TV wouldn’t turn on, the WiFi was unstable and poor, and I had to go to the SASA across the way for a decent connection. The walls are thin enough to hear the neighbours talking. Staff were a bit rude, though that wasn’t the main problem. It does the basic job of giving you somewhere to stay, but I’d spend a little more for a more decent hotel.

The entrance has a sign saying “torture hotel,” and after two nights I could see why. This place is hecking nasty. Even if a better place costs triple, pay it.

The best things here are the location and the friendly staff. You’re within a five-minute walk of Mongkok MTR, right in the middle of the popular “Ladies market.” The staff don’t speak any English, though. If you stay, I’d choose a room with twin beds for more comfort. Finding Fortune hotel took me over 20 minutes, even though Google Maps said one minute. The map showed me across the road when I was already at Wing Wah Building, so look for that building instead. Fortune is on the fifth floor, to the right when you leave the service lift. There are other hotels and local residents in the ten-storey building. The service lifts are shared, and the stairwells had “slumps” thrown on every level, so I’d stick to the area between your room and the lift. I arrived in HK after midnight, when only premium or cheap buses were available. I took the N21 for HK$23 per person, a fixed fare, and got off at Bank Center after 27 stops from T1/T2. Google Maps helped with the route. The bus showed live information, including stop numbers, in Chinese and English, with announcements in both languages. There was plenty of room for luggage. Don’t expect a three- or five-star hotel. The room was small, with a super single bed meant for two that wasn’t comfortable for two people. The attached toilet left little room to walk or store luggage. It was clean, and the old air conditioner and water heater worked well, but the ceiling exhaust fan was noisy. You could hear voices from outside and noise from the next room because it wasn’t soundproof. Honestly, I’d call this a GUEST HOUSE, not a hotel.
