Mei Lam Guest House

For 5,000 yen a night, the value was incredibly good, and I'd definitely stay again. I chose this guesthouse because it was listed in the "Lonely Planet" guidebook. Other hotels were over 20,000 yen, though at this price you should expect some compromises. It's on a main street, close to lots of tourist attractions, which made it a great sightseeing base. The area felt safe at night. My windowless room had a bed, TV, shower, and toilet. I'd expected it to be run-down, but it was surprisingly clean. The white sheets and towels were clean, and there wasn't a noticeable smell. The shower pressure and hot water were enough. In my room, the outlets were high up, so a cable might dangle depending on its length. The shower room is open to the bedroom above, which leaves the room humid after a shower. The walls are thin. I could hear the next room's toilet and shower, as well as hallway footsteps. Noise woke me a few times, but most guests seemed well-mannered, so it didn't bother me too much. The owner, a woman of Southeast Asian descent, was kind and always smiling. She wasn't often at reception, probably because she was busy, so checking in might be confusing. Someone nearby may be able to call her if you ask. She gave me her contact information, saying, "This is my boss. You can contact him here if you have any questions," but I haven't had a reply yet. As I said, it's for people who can accept some compromises for 5000 yen.
