I've stayed in around eight or nine different guest houses in Chungking Mansions since 2006, and New Peking Guest House is one of the better ones. The staff are friendly and really helpful, and the rooms are fairly clean. The air inside does get kind of sticky, though. I'd recommend it to solo travelers looking for a clean place in the middle of Hong Kong.

The room was clean, but so cramped that I had to open my suitcase in the space under the bed. It had a small fridge, an electric water heater that gave us hot water, and a window air conditioner that kept it comfortable in summer. The photos on the booking site showed a bright room with a view out the window, but the actual room felt dim even with the lights on. We picked the place for a family trip of three because the price was reasonable. The walls were thin, so sound carried, and there was a sign asking people to stay quiet at night. Getting around the building could take a while. Our part of Chungking Building had just one elevator for both even and odd floors, and waits varied by time of day. The guesthouse is on the 12th floor and an intermediate floor. Going up, I could usually board if I waited, sometimes as long as 20 minutes. Going down, the elevator was often full at the 12th floor, so there was no room to get on and I had to use the stairs. It was narrow, nominally fitting eight people, but seemed too small for eight and often went over the weight limit. At checkout, I carried my suitcase up to the 15th floor, three floors above, then took the elevator that serves odd-numbered floors down to the ground floor. That was much quicker.

It's a cool, quiet, comfortable room, and the place is close to Simsa-chui's main shopping area, so the location feels safe and convenient. Great value, highly recommend it.

The location is great, the staff are friendly, and there's plenty of amenities. I'll come back next time.
