Seventh Heaven Hotel

The view was stunning and the location was a dream, with excellent value for money. My room was perfect, apart from the towels and a few plugs that didn’t work properly. The lift can get busy in the morning when the cleaners are working.

The room and fridge both had mold, and the poorly made doors let in every sound from outside. The reception staff were nice, and the location was good. But the restaurant advertised offers that felt like bait, and the waitress was intrusive and rude.

On my second stay, I noticed some renovations, and reception staff now speak good English. The hotel still looks dated, though, in keeping with its 1932 building. The rooms are spacious and cleaned well, and the location is very convenient, right by Shanghai’s main shopping streets. People’s Square station is close, and East Nanjing Road station is walkable. I used the Nanjing Road pedestrian street exit and reached the hotel in about five minutes. There are lots of restaurants and shops nearby. For breakfast, I’d eat in the area: Jian Bing is great, and there are dozens of other cheap street food options. Set up Alipay before coming to China. For good, fun coffee, there’s a robot machine near the hotel on Nanjing Road. I stayed alone. The Wi-Fi is open, with no captive portal, but it’s useless in China unless you have a good VPN. From PVG, the cheapest route is Line 2 to People’s Square. Another option is taking the Maglev for a short, very high-speed ride, then transferring to Line 2 at its end. Shanghai is a great city.
