Hostal Boutique Casa Escallon

The reservation mix-up meant our room wasn’t available when we checked in, but Kevin at reception went out of his way to find us another private room and help with everything else we needed. The rooms, bathrooms, and shared spaces were sparkling clean. The simple white decor makes the place feel airy in Cartagena’s hot, humid weather. There’s a kitchen, a large room for computer work, strong WiFi, a nice rooftop solarium, and a pool.

You’re right in the middle of everything, and the location is hard to beat. There’s a convenience store next door for water, Serrazuela mall is a 6-minute walk for ATMs and coffee, Exito is 3 minutes away, and the Clock monument tower is also 3 minutes away. I liked using the small pool for a quick daily workout. They also do laundry the same day, at a reasonable cost of 12,000 CP for a bag of 5-6 items. Sleep was tough at times. Music went on until 1am, the walls are thin enough that you hear people upstairs or next door, and music or TV in the center of the hotel sometimes started around 9am-10am. I was also surprised by fees that hadn’t been disclosed, so I’d encourage guests to question them.

The workers were kind and helpful, and there’s a lovely rooftop where you can sit and meet people. The hostal also has a nice pool, big rooms, good beds, and a bathroom in every room. Very recommended.

In the old Cartagena area, it’s close to Getsemaní and the clock tower. The people were friendly and helpful in the kitchen. I appreciated the newer kitchen appliances, cutlery, and plates. A small investment in decoration could make the place look much better.
