The room looked nothing like the advertised bed-and-sofa setup. It was really a converted hallway, with a filthy, child-sized sofa, rusty and crusty closet and minibar, and chipped, stained walls. The bathroom and room were filthy too: no hot water, no working flush, and no electrical outlets. The room stayed damp and smelled strongly of chlorine, with the pool motor roaring nearby. Its “door” was a converted glass window, and less than 20 minutes after check-in the key broke off in the lock, leaving the door unsecured. Staff were pleasant but seemed embarrassed, and they didn’t help protect our belongings even though the room was right by the pool and lobby. It felt unsafe and completely nonfunctional. Other guests told us they thought it was the worst hotel they’d stayed at, but couldn’t afford to leave. They also had no hot water and broken toilets. We went to dinner to regroup and find somewhere else. This was advertised as a 5-star luxury hotel, but it was so far from acceptable that Amex credited our card within 15 minutes of my filing a dispute over misrepresented services. We moved to Hotel Movich down the street, paid a little more, and got one of the most luxurious rooms I’ve ever stayed in, with an excellent restaurant and spectacular views of Cartagena.

The hotel sits in an excellent spot inside the walled city. Breakfast was very complete, and our room was cleaned daily until it felt like new. The place itself is spacious and has that colonial, old-novel feel. From the moment we arrived, the staff were smiling and ready to help. It was a wonderful stay.

Laura, Keyla and Milton were always there when we needed anything, and the breakfast was delicious. The hotel’s beautiful spaces and its location in Cartagena de Indias’ historic center made it a great choice. My room was just right, with everything I expected, a really comfortable bed, and a bathroom that felt straight out of a colonial movie. They made my first time in Colombia my best stay. Leones de Alba was great, and I couldn’t have picked a better hotel.

The location was amazing, and the hotel and room are spacious and beautiful. Everyone was friendly, and the views were great. Still, it didn’t feel like a 5-star stay. Our first-floor room was by reception, where we sometimes heard a receptionist watching loud videos late at night while we were trying to sleep. It seemed funny at first, then not so much. The water was extremely cold for the first two days; after we complained twice, it got somewhat better. I understand it’s an old building, but it would have been good to know ahead of time. Two of us had colds and a fever, and we were paying thousands for five nights. Breakfast was included, but the choices were limited. We had a good stay aside from those complaints.

The location was hard to beat, with everything within walking distance. My husband and I slept really well in the comfortable beds, and Ronald made the best mojito I’ve ever tried. Keyla always greeted us with a smile. The staff were very helpful too, even finding us a last-minute place on a sunset cruise in the bay. We had a wonderful time at Leones de Alba.
