Hotel Dann Monasterio Popayán

The location and building are lovely, and the rooms are nice with comfortable beds. But we were very disappointed after traveling extensively around Colombia. This is not a five-star hotel, and the service is appalling. At breakfast, even getting a waiter to pour coffee feels like a lot to ask. The waiting staff are polite, but seem uninterested, perhaps because they aren’t trained or are paid so little they don’t care. The pool doesn’t look as shown on the website and has no shade, and the patio chairs described as comfy really aren’t. The hotel itself feels tired in places, something we might have overlooked if the service had been great. Maybe it’s the “best” in Popayan, but we wouldn’t come back.

The staff were extremely friendly, professional, and attentive, and the free buffet breakfast was outstanding. Set in the historic center, the hotel is a former monastery and a national historic building, with churches, museums, and other sights just a few minutes away on foot. The grounds are peaceful and beautifully decorated. The bedrooms are very spacious and comfortable, with a fridge and TV streaming services, and some have terraces. Dann Monasterio Popayan made a visit to Popayan extra special and memorable.

We had a wonderful stay, with good service and food options. The colonial downtown is perfect for walking around, and the airport is only about a five-minute drive away. One thing that could be improved is the placement of the electrical outlets in the rooms, since they’re hard to reach.

The breakfast is simple, but tasty and nicely presented. Our room was spotless and comfortable, and the sound isolation really helped during a very busy week. Everyone on staff we met was incredible, generous, flexible, and kind. Without a doubt, this is the best hotel in Popayán for us, and the only one we’ll stay at on future visits. We loved it. Thanks to the whole team for everything you do.
