Sam's VIP Hostel San Gil

The front desk was quick and friendly, the location was perfect, and the AC in my deluxe room worked well. But I slept so badly that none of that made up for the room, and this place just wasn't for me. Maybe these problems won't be deal breakers for everyone. The sheets had a huge stain. The bed and pillows were wrapped in plastic, so I was sweating on one side and freezing on the other. The floor was dirty and covered in hair, and they need a vacuum. The AC drained through a moldy pipe into a moldy shower corner. The shower was completely clogged, leaving my feet in gross water while I bathed. The wifi was OK. I can see this hostel or hotel working well for lots of people, but I had different expectations.

I've stayed in dozens of hostels, and this is one of the better ones. The staff are really friendly, and the rooms and laundry are fairly priced. The facilities were clean, with both AC and fans provided. I really enjoyed my stay.

I didn't stay overnight here, but I did book a rafting trip through the hostel. Amanda was so helpful and nice, with great hospitality. I really recommend arranging tours with them.

Sitting right on the main square in San Gil, the hostel made a great base. Diego and Amanda made me feel at home, sorted out rafting and caving trips easily, and shared local recommendations. The rooms and common areas were clean, as were the pool and sauna, which was a first for me. My main small complaint was the mattress. It dipped in the middle and discomfort kept waking me up. The sliding door to my room was also hard to open and could use adjustment. Still, it was a great stay in one of my favorite small towns in Colombia. I hope to return soon.
