Alajuela Backpackers Airport Hostel

It’s clean, the internet works, and there’s plenty of food and rest nearby within walking distance, even though there’s no kitchen. The airport is super close, and they’ll pick you up and drop you off. I couldn’t have asked for more.

The free shuttle is the one real plus here. There’s no communal kitchen, and the only shared space is a nice terrace. I also didn’t feel the guests got much attention. The noise was the worst part: if you get a room facing the loud streets, sleep is really difficult.

The free shuttle alone earns this place four stars for me. That service is rare, since most places just call you a taxi. The staff were incredibly kind after I accidentally booked the wrong date, following 12 hours at the airport and two canceled flights. They found me a room and booked me onto the next day’s shuttle. It’s a huge property beside a park and bus station, about 10 minutes from the airport. I got a good price for the four bed women’s dorm. Bring a towel. I couldn’t work out the hot water, so I took a cold shower. The beds weren’t too uncomfortable, but their plastic covers make a lot of noise when people move. I’m a heavy sleeper and managed fine, though the others in my room mentioned it several times. I’d stay again for the convenience and kind staff.

The place feels like an old asylum, with the lights always off, and nothing seems to have changed. The bathrooms were dirty, there were cockroaches, and the staff were rude and distrustful. The location felt sketchy at best and dangerous at night. You can find better service nearby.
