Cristal Ballena Boutique Hotel & Spa

We spent four nights here and didn’t want to miss a single one. We saw so many animals, including toucans, snakes, colorful birds, coatis, and hummingbirds. There’s a huge pool with a lovely sea view, and the open-air restaurant has an incredible sunset view. The hotel sits in peaceful natural surroundings, about 800 meters from the beach, an easy walk. The staff were super friendly and helpful, and every meal we ate here was delicious. It was the best hotel of our three-and-a-half-week Costa Rica road trip. We’re grateful we got to stay and would definitely recommend visiting.

The ocean view from our room was magnificent, and the grounds are lovely. We spotted plenty of birds and other wildlife from the patio and while walking around. The trail has recently been improved, and they’re still making updates. We’re already looking forward to coming back. The staff were friendly and helpful, from check-in and housekeeping to the restaurant team, and the food was great. Our patio had a high wall between it and the others, so there was some privacy, plus a ceiling fan that we appreciated. You could still hear other guests a bit. It wasn’t perfect, but I’d say at least 4.5 stars.

We saved the rainforest trails on the hotel property for our last day. My Costa Rican friend said it was the best trail she’d hiked anywhere in Costa Rica, and I can see why. It’s thoughtfully laid out and beautifully maintained. Next time I come, I’d like to hire a local bird expert to join me on the trails. I loved the whole place, and the staff were friendly and attentive. Thanks, Cristal Ballena, for such a wonderful experience.

The rooms and pool have stunning views, and the property itself is beautiful. The grounds are kept in great shape, and the staff are attentive. We enjoyed the food at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Such a lovely place.
