PuraVida has plenty of room indoors and outside, and the current volunteers are lovely, upbeat young people. I liked the breezy hillside setting, with trees providing shade, and the paved walk up from the hectic main road still leaves the beach within easy walking distance. Ronny's Super #1 is very close and has the best prices on pretty much EVERYTHING; MegaSuper nearby can be cheaper when it has advertised discounts. The place is kept very clean, the mattresses are comfortable, and I like its faded, lived-in, rough-around-the-edges feel. But the kitchen could use more equipment, and several things needed fixing, including faucets, switches, a toilet, and a shower drain. Midway through my month-long stay, a sewage smell started wafting into the gazebo and the upper kitchen and dining area, getting stronger over time. The handyman was respectful, diligent, and great on a surfboard, but didn’t seem experienced enough to get the repairs done. As an experienced, very pushy 56-year-old gringo repairman, I also felt he might not be confident enough to push the owner to provide what was needed. The owner was courteous and gentle, but seemed oddly hesitant to spend the small amount of money and effort needed to sort things out. I don’t mean cosmetic fixes. Nobody wants to smell sewage or wait for a decent knife, frying pan, or working toilet. Also, dorm guests should know there’s no free breakfast and no hot shower, despite the “mistakes” on HostelWorld and Booking.com.

By far my best hostel experience. The reception staff were polite and helpful, and my shared room was tidy and clean. The bathrooms and common spaces were well cared for too. I slept well, had a shower before leaving, and appreciated the books for readers like me.

I was very comfortable in the room. It was great, and I’d happily come back.

I arrived excited, but the four-person room was tiny, uncomfortable, and not very clean. I’ve spent years staying in hostels and can handle a bit of dirt, but for the price this just wasn’t a good deal. The listing was also misleading and didn’t match what we found. The receptionist and workers were friendly, and the receptionist tried to look after us. The owner, though, left a very sour impression. He seemed focused on profit and didn’t appear to care about guests’ needs or to share important information. We were so unhappy that our whole group moved to another hostel to get away from Pura Vida Mini. I appreciate the employees’ understanding and like supporting small businesses, but I can’t support this hostel in good faith. I won’t name the other place because I don’t want to advertise it, but we liked it much better. There are plenty of options for travelers who care about how they’re treated, so I’d strongly suggest looking elsewhere if you’re considering booking here. This experience left me unhappy during my trip. Hope you have a good day.

The shared space was a favorite, with a well-equipped kitchen, pool, hammocks, and a calm feel among the greenery. It’s only a few minutes on foot to the beach, which makes it handy for surfers and anyone wanting time by the ocean. I spent almost a month at Pura Vida Mini Hotel and had a fantastic stay. Rooms were cozy, clean, and well maintained. For extra comfort, I’d pick a room with AC and a private bathroom. The owner and staff were welcoming and happy to help or offer local tips. Wi-Fi worked pretty well, though remote workers may want mobile data as backup. I’d definitely stay again.
