The damp, mildew smell hits you as soon as you enter, and there was black mould on the walls, around the windows, and even on the curtains. I woke up covered in bites after discovering the room was crawling with bed bugs. Everything felt grimy, neglected, and outdated. The flooring was filthy and falling apart, and it looked like it hadn’t been properly cleaned in years or updated since the 1980s. Staying here felt like a health hazard. I’ve stayed in some rough places while travelling, but this was the absolute worst. Do yourself a favour and stay somewhere else. Your lungs, skin, and sanity will thank you.

The beach and grocery store are an easy short walk away, even without a car. It’s a lovely, artsy hostel tucked into the jungle, with all the usual hostel amenities and plenty of private room options. A beautiful place to stay.

A cosy place with lots of nice people, especially the staff. The rooms were clean and pleasant, and the shower was clean too, with normal pressure and warm, hot water.

The property is spread out with lots of spots to hang out, and it’s a peaceful place away from the chaos. My friend and I each rented a private room for a couple of nights. The staff were friendly and helpful, good vibes, and the rooms had comfy queen beds. It’s about a 10-minute walk to the beach and just under an hour on foot to town. Bikes are available too. I’d highly recommend it if you want a low-key, relaxing stay.

The new owner, Pablo, makes you feel right at home. I arrived as a guest and left as a friend. The rooms are comfortable, the kitchen is well equipped, and there’s free coffee. Renovations are underway, and the whole place feels noticeably clean. There’s plenty of open space and natural surroundings, with two friendly pets, so it’s a lovely spot to get away from the city and breathe fresh air. My favorite place in Puerto Viejo.
