Mar Verde Lodge

Leon and Stafan were amazing hosts, and Leon is an incredible cook. We couldn’t have chosen a better place to stay in Puerto Viejo. The breakfast was out of this world, easily the best in Puerto Viejo. We’ll definitely be back next year.

We spent our last six days in Costa Rica here, and I’m so glad we chose this place. The location is a bit secluded, which is nice if you want to get away from the city buzz. There are dogs, chickens, roosters, a peacock, a cat, and more animals on the property, which makes the stay one of a kind. The hosts are incredibly friendly, helpful, funny, and nice. They make breakfast with their own and local ingredients, and it’s to die for. A big thanks to Leon and Stefan 🙏. If we come back, we’ll stay here again without a doubt.

A beach and a few small restaurants are within walking distance, though having a bicycle, scooter, or car would help with exploring the area. You can often see wildlife from the lodge. We spotted monkeys, hummingbirds, and a toucan. We stayed three nights and really enjoyed it. The accommodation is cosy and beautifully furnished, and breakfast is something special. Leon is an excellent cook who made us a fresh three-course breakfast every morning. Thank you so much, Leon!

We stayed three nights in January 2025, at the start of our Costa Rica trip, and had a fantastic time. The cottage is raised on stilts with parking underneath, and it’s beautifully located and lovingly furnished. The open layout took a little getting used to, especially since even the bathroom looks out onto greenery. The jungle sounds and atmosphere felt magical. The garden was an adventure of its own. We saw a sloth on the first day, plus a large iguana, lots of birds including hummingbirds, and an agouti scurrying around. Each morning Leon spoiled us with a delicious breakfast: fresh fruit juice, yogurt, a big fruit platter, and then a different, unusual main course every day. There are lovely national parks to explore on both sides, and a gorgeous beach just a five-minute walk away. The lodge is somewhat secluded, so restaurants are best reached by car. The only small drawback is traffic out front, though it gets quieter at night.
