Hotel Aurora

The staff were friendly and tried to help, and our room had plenty of space, a large fridge, and lots of outlets. The AC worked well, too. But at $139 a night, our stay in room #33 didn't feel like good value. It was the most remote room, reached by three flights of stairs and then a short flight down, with the final staircase barely two feet wide. One wall faced the main road into Montezuma, and the traffic noise came through loudly. Earplugs would have helped; my wife bought some at the local supermarket. Rooms elsewhere in the hotel might be quieter. Wi-Fi was unreliable in our room despite being advertised, and a staff member couldn't get it working for us. A neighbor we met in the shared outdoor seating area had the same problem, though reception was better there. The floor's white tiles had lots of dark cracks, and bits of grout were coming loose in places, including the bathroom, making it awkward to walk. We also had to choose between leaving the bathroom window closed and dealing with steam and odors, or opening it and letting insects in, since it had no screen. The bathroom bin wasn't emptied for two days, even though guests are asked not to flush toilet paper. We had to ask for it to be taken away. The room was spacious, and the staff were responsive, but those issues affected the stay.

Having a little kitchen, a full-size fridge, and a coffee machine with coffee in the room was such a nice touch. The staff were warm and helpful, even sharing lunch with me, and the room was cleaned really well. It's a genuinely local, small hotel. The first-floor rooms share a veranda that feels like a treehouse. I'd recommend getting air conditioning.

I felt very safe at Hotel Aurora and around Montezuma, and I'd book here again if I returned. During my stay from December 26 to January 1st 2024, the place was in good shape, with clean, spacious rooms and internet access. There was a working kitchen, books to borrow, and hammocks and tables outside the rooms. The staff were friendly and gave me useful information about places to visit. The hotel is well located, with several beaches within walking distance, as well as the waterfall and other sights.

On our second trip to Montezuma, we had a great stay at Hotel Aurora. The location is just beside downtown and about a two-minute walk from the beach. Staff were welcoming and accommodating, and the clean, comfortable rooms had all the amenities we needed. Good value for the price.
