It’s out of the way, and I booked it thinking it would be a great base for Tortuga Island. It turns out you have to go from Montezuma for that. Still, the place itself is superb, peaceful, private, and an unbelievable value for the price. It felt almost like a private luxury villa at affordable rates, and Thomas was wonderfully welcoming and helpful. Bring your supplies, including water, snacks, and alcohol, and you’ll have a great stay. It was the best place we stayed in Costa Rica, though I only wish it were closer to the more popular spots.

Thomas’s vision is what brought this place to life, and he’s knowledgeable and pleasant. The intentionally designed rooms, more like cabins, really do offer a lot of privacy. I’d recommend the breakfast too, and booking directly gets you a discount. Before booking, I’d read the reviews and knew it was a gem. Usually high expectations disappoint me, but not here. It really is a quiet little sanctuary away from the bustle while still close to many things. If you like privacy, good service, and being surrounded by nature, this is the place.

Thomas is attentive, thoughtful, and helpful with anything you need. The included breakfast has three kinds of local fruit each day, eggs cooked how you like them, warm sourdough, and banana bread. There are two pools on the property, where you can also see monkeys, birds, and other animals. Thomas offers laundry service for a reasonable fee. This place feels like a little piece of paradise outside Montezuma in Tambor. We’d 100% stay here again.

Tucked away in the forest, this is a beautiful, secluded place to stay. The rooms are varied and lovely, breakfast is good, and the host was kind and helpful. One of the best stays in the region.

Getting to Lodge Margouillat takes a bit of effort, so I’d suggest having a rental car, ideally an SUV. Once there, though, we had three great nights: the grounds are kept in lovely condition despite being surrounded by nature, and we spotted monkeys and coatis. Thomas was a thoughtful host with useful recommendations, and breakfast was very good. I’d happily recommend the lodge.
