We had a great time at Iguana with the kids. They liked the pool and bay so much that after one meal at a competing resort costing about $1000 more per night, they couldn't wait to get back. The boogie boards, tennis court and amazing food were all hits, and the wildlife was abundant. We saw more howler monkeys and macaws here than at every other place combined on our Costa Rica trip. One day, howlers gathered in the big tree over the pool while our kids played, giving us quite a show. They also made a lot of noise through the night, which I wasn't thrilled about while trying to sleep, but that only happened once, and wildlife is part of what you come for. For lighter noise, there are rooms with glass windows; ours had screens, and I'd choose those again because they made the jungle feel more immediate. Waking to birds, howlers and the waves was wonderful. Management handled a hiccup with one of our tours very professionally. I also disagree with complaints I've seen about the food and roads. The gravel road had some rough patches, but Iguana presumably doesn't own it, and roads across Costa Rica were often just as bad or worse. The road to the resort that cost $1000 more a night was much longer and rougher. Iguana is close to Puerto Jimenez but still feels wild. Highly recommended.
The beach is sandy and stretches for miles, and we spotted more than 20 kinds of fish snorkeling in the bay, plus sea turtles. Iguana Lodge gave us the quiet, secluded stay and wildlife we were looking for, along with great food, friendly attentive staff and clean, comfortable rooms. We enjoyed the other restaurants we tried, but the Pearl had the best food around. Thanks to Mardi, Andrés, Alphonso, Cristian and all the hard-working people who made the stay so special.
Laurene, the owner and host, went out of her way to help me enjoy my stay, book the right tours and find the right places to see. She was a perfect host. I spent two nights here and had a wonderful nature experience, with great facilities and outstanding service. The food was very good too.
We didn't stay at Iguana Lodge, but ate dinner there four times. The chefs were spectacular, showing their skill with the fresh tuna we brought one evening, snapper another, and snapper and mackerel on the next, all served with sides. Everything tasted so good. Service was exceptional, and the setting and atmosphere felt high end.
The trails were well kept and the views were breathtaking, whether we were walking or hiking. Staff were consistently friendly and attentive, and the massages at the spa were some of the best I've had, really rejuvenating. The outdoor shower and private jacuzzi surrounded by greenery were also stunning and relaxing. Food was a mix: the soup was delicious and comforting, but breakfast was a letdown. The cereal milk was warm, the yogurt was room temperature, and the selection overall lacked quality. Even with that breakfast issue, the ambiance, outdoor amenities and service made the stay memorable. Better breakfast would make it close to flawless.
