The boardwalk is a lovely way to get introduced to the local rainforest. It's about a mile through lush forest, with interesting insects, birds, lizards, and plants along the way. They gave us a helpful booklet about common flora and fauna, and our guide Jack was knowledgeable, patient, and clearly passionate about his work. After the walk, we had a beautiful lunch made at the lodge. We also went kayaking. It was easy enough for beginners, though the route takes a little over two hours and can get wet, especially with the afternoon rain, so bring a change of clothes. The bus service was quick, and our kind driver handled the bumpy two-hour ride from San Jose expertly. For the price, it was an experience we'd recommend to anyone.

The bungalow had very few amenities, so arriving felt a little outside my comfort zone, though that made sense for the low nightly price. What I got in return was probably my best experience in Costa Rica, and it felt more authentic than the Pacific coast. The welcome was warm and unpretentious, always with a smile. We were the only guests in the reserve for two days, and they opened the restaurant just for us. We hiked from our accommodation and saw monkeys and macaws in a magnificent setting. Getting there meant driving past huge pineapple fields, then taking a track for the final stretch. I loved it.

I found a beautiful lodge here with the biggest bungalow I could get for the price. There's a lovely boardwalk through the jungle, with birds and other wildlife all around. A canoe trip on the Rio Quarto is well worth doing.
