The forest setting is part of the experience, so expect to find ants, spiders, and tiny jumping bugs in the room. They’re harmless, but worth knowing about if you’re squeamish. You’ll also hear birds and monkeys calling to each other in the evening and early morning. We even spotted an armadillo on the walk back one night, along with some very well-behaved community dogs. We stayed two nights at Cala Lodge for work. The staff were attentive and really friendly, and breakfast was included, made fresh when we came down. We were lucky to get an outer room with a balcony facing the mountains and huge windows. San Elena is about a 20-minute walk away. Going down is easy, though most of the return walk is uphill. We’d stay here again.

We enjoyed wandering around the garden and spotted a Toucanet, plus got a lovely photo of a motmot. The rooms were clean and spacious, and the complimentary coffee and cake at midday were a nice touch. I’d definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting the area.

The wildlife was the highlight for us. There’s a great trail around the property, and we walked it every day. Birds and monkeys came onto the grounds daily, and there was so much to see that you could spend your stay here watching wildlife without heading elsewhere. Truly spectacular. If you’re unsure where to stay in Costa Rica, this place is an easy recommendation.

We were a group of three, and this was my favorite stop during our week in Costa Rica. It’s right in the cloud forest, so you need to be okay with some bugs. There’s also a short trail connected to the lodge. What a little gem.

We had a tour arranged by the staff, and it turned out to be the best one we took, with the best guide. The garden and trail are gorgeous, and we saw lots of different, rare animals there, including a Mot-Mot Bird, Agutis, and plenty of monkeys. The hotel is stunning, the staff were so kind, and the view is beautiful. Rooms are small but very comfortable. Breakfast was very good, and at noon there’s complimentary coffee with homemade cake. Just watch out, the Mot-Mots might steal it! This was the most beautiful hotel in Monteverde we could have asked for. I think we’ll definitely come back one day. Greetings from Germany!
