The staff were great and very helpful, and communication was good. They usually responded fairly quickly when we messaged with questions on WhatsApp. We also liked the sitting area outside our room. The kitchen had a full-size fridge and the basics for cooking, plus they provided coffee, filters, and dishwashing soap. There was no shower soap or shampoo/conditioner, though. The tap water was okay to drink, and a nice cold pitcher of water was waiting in the fridge. The only other thing we wished for was more beach loungers, since most of the chairs seemed to be taken each day. This small, quaint hotel is directly on the beach and about a 10 minute walk from Samara town, which we really loved. We weren't prepared for the open-air sleeping area, though. The windows in the main living space, where the twin trundle bed is, are screens and can't be closed, so we heard dogs, roosters, early morning sprinklers, and other guests. It got hot and was hard to fall asleep. We knew only the bedroom would have A/C, but hadn't realized the other beds would be in an open area. It cooled down after a few hours, and we always travel with earplugs, but it wasn't ideal for the kids. The curtains there were very light, and the outside lights stayed on all night, which might bother people sleeping on the trundle beds. The bedroom DID have good A/C. Even with that, we'd recommend the hotel.

We’ve stayed at the Fenix Hotel 27 times now, and it still feels special every visit. The small grounds are lovely, with shady spots, hammocks, and lounge chairs, and the rooms are clean, nicely decorated, and have kitchens stocked with plenty of supplies. The staff are attentive and pleasant. Being right on the beach is hard to beat. Already looking forward to next year. Thanks again for a wonderful stay! Kate and Jim

The Casa was perfect for our two-night stay. It sits on its own, so it felt private, and being just steps from the beach was great. Our boys, 11 and 13, loved the beach too. Restaurants and grocery stores are nearby, and the area is much more relaxed than Tamarindo, for example. We were really happy with it.

The Fenix is a tiny, private hotel with plenty of outdoor places to relax, from hammocks and loungers to deck chairs and a big gazebo. But the best part was being so close to the ocean. We’d get up early, sit in comfortable chairs, and have coffee as the sun came up, just 30 feet from our room, which was more like an apartment. We’ve just come back from a week here, and we’ll be back. There aren’t many places in Costa Rica where you can stay this close to the beach.

We’ve returned to the Fenix many times, and it feels like a place that stays with you. Jay makes sure everything looks beautiful, helps arrange tours and grilling freshly caught fish, and brings guests together. We’ve made friends here who feel like family, and Jay does too. The hotel has only six units, so the property never feels crowded. There’s a clear, cool pool in the middle, perfect after the easy 10-minute walk along the beach to Samara. Our family of four gets a bed for everyone, plus a kitchen, and the shallow, lovely beach is only steps away. Palm trees, hammocks, and lounge chairs offer spots to read, nap, or find shade.
