We got up at 5:00 am and had an amazing time spotting a male quetzsal. You can also head out for hikes nearby, or walk down the road to restaurants. For a longer hike, we paid Savegre hotel $10.00 and enjoyed miles of trails. The cabin's balcony was such a nice bonus, with the river rushing over the rocks right below. The location is hard to beat, and the sound of the water made the place feel so peaceful. The cabins have what you need, and our room was very clean with hot water. There is internet, and it worked perfectly for us. It can get chilly since the cabins aren't heated, so be ready to snuggle up. We were fine with that. The staff were so kind and friendly. Breakfast isn't included, but if you let them know ahead of time, they'll make it for you. We'll definitely stay here again.
The booking fell apart just hours before check-in, after I had already paid in full through Expedia. Cabinas El Quetzal said it was a "mistake" with the channel manager and that there was no availability. I was left scrambling for somewhere to stay in a remote area, with no help or alternatives offered. I found the whole experience dishonest, unreliable, and completely unprofessional. Canceling like that and leaving me stranded showed no accountability. If you need a place you can count on, avoid booking here. The service was horrible.
Carlos led us on a guided walk and helped us spot a pair of quetzels, along with a bunch of other amazing birds. The staff kept treating us wonderfully for the rest of our stay, and the fruit and breakfast choices were delicious. This place is incredible for bird lovers, and it's also a beautiful escape from the heat at lower elevations in costa rica. The family who runs it are the sweetest, most welcoming people. I really can't say enough good things about them or the place.
The rooms are simple, but comfortable, and we spotted a quetzal less than 100 yards from ours. There were plenty of other birds along the road too. We stayed in February 2014 and were very happy with both the room and the food. The owners don't speak English, but we managed to communicate somehow. It's not as upscale as some of the valley lodges, though it was plenty good enough for us and a great value. I'd definitely recommend it.
