The forest setting is what makes this place special. Though it's in the city center, the outdoor lounge and breakfast spots feel tucked into the rainforest, with exotic birds and small animals around. Inside, the decor is understated, with classic wooden floors, and the staff are always cheerful. The breakfast is fantastic, too. By European standards, I'd call it a two- or three-star hotel at most. It's not trying to be luxurious: there’s no air conditioning or refrigerator in the room, and the TV may only get Spanish channels, if it works at all. The rooms are spotlessly clean, though.

There's plenty to do nearby. A walk into the Dent area brings you to good shopping and places to eat, and the University of Costa Rica isn't far if you'd like a chance to spot a sloth. When we stayed, Aranjuez Park, just down the street, had a community dance on Friday afternoon and a very nice market on Saturday. The hotel itself is a really unique place, as many other reviews have said.

Super breakfast and friendly service. The place is really unique and fancy, with plants and mascarades all around. Take a look and you'll be surprised by the ambiente.

Good price, a unique hotel, and a great breakfast. I've stayed twice. I'm pretty particular about beds, and one was super comfy while the other wasn't quite as comfortable.

Breakfast in the hotel's garden was the one bright spot. The garden was pleasant and well maintained, but it couldn't make up for the rest of our stay at Aranjuez Hotel in San José. We expected a comfortable hotel room and instead found ourselves in a separate apartment-like building, which looked more like a hospital than a hotel. It wasn't old or dirty, but it felt unwelcoming and didn't match what the booking had led us to expect. Check-in was a mess. A tall, thin man with glasses was rude and inefficient, kept telling us the room would be ready in “10 minutes,” and left us waiting for 40 minutes. We finally got in at 2:45 PM, well past the expected time. No one offered to hold our luggage at reception. The room was hard to sleep in because the soundproofing was terrible and noise from the neighboring room kept us up all night. Since we were in a separate building, reaching reception if something went wrong was impossible. In the bathroom, the sink was broken, there was visible mold in the shower, hot water was barely available, and the water pressure was extremely low. When we asked how to get to the city center, the staff gave vague, unhelpful directions and seemed annoyed by our questions. The overall service was poor, and the place felt disorganized, with little attention to guests. This was a completely unsatisfactory stay, far below expectations. We booked a hotel room and ended up with numerous inconveniences in an external apartment. We don't recommend it at all.
