Hotel Villa Tournon

One nice surprise was all the original artwork around the hotel, much of it showing life in the Costa Rican Highlands or the Caribbean Basin. Dinner at the hotel bar was good, though a little overpriced. The rooms were much better than the pool area, which was very dirty, and the hot tub was out of service and half full of dirty water. The carpeted floors in the rooms should be replaced with tile for hygiene and allergy reasons. The hotel seems to have been in better shape before. Update: staff cleaned the pool area the next day, and I really enjoyed it, so I raised my rating to four stars.

The breakfast was terrible. The only warm dishes were omelet, poor sausage, rice, and hotcakes. They didn't confirm the room number or give any information. The pool was tiny, dirty, and unmaintained, and nobody seemed to use it. There were lots of mosquitoes in the room, and the owner wasn't friendly. The exercise room looked abandoned, with no treadmill, just three bicycles and one stepper. I'll never return. There was also a confusing breakfast charge. The owner charged me based on a document saying breakfast wasn't included, even though I had already paid for breakfast. The amount I paid seemed reasonable with breakfast included, and the owner didn't disclose the rate they received. I can't help thinking there may have been a lie involved.

We arrived stressed after a problem at our previous hotel, with two kids and nowhere else to stay. The woman at reception was very helpful and did what she could to get us a room. The hotel was exceptionally clean, and the room was cleaned daily. It had AC and a mini fridge, and the pool was beautiful. The staff were wonderful and helpful, and breakfast was excellent. Highly recommend.

The pool area is the standout, almost like its own little nature preserve. Staff were very attentive, and you can walk to many amenities nearby. A good base for exploring the San Jose area.
