The location is good, but our stay was so bad that we left after one night of a five-night booking. We didn't sleep that night and were bitten by mosquitoes coming through gaps in broken windows in both the bedroom and bathroom. We didn't bother with breakfast, and Bergerac refused to refund the unused nights, so we're approaching our bank about a chargeback. The hotel is family-run and badly needs updating and care. We chose the SUP1B Superior Room with one queen bed, described as spacious, with a private garden patio, refrigerator, and Wi-Fi. There was no refrigerator. The garden was overgrown and the outdoor furniture was too dirty to use. Most things in the room were filthy, and it appeared unchanged from a TripAdvisor review posted March 25. The mattress was heavily stained; there were drip marks on the wall, a yellow-stained toilet, a gritty dirty floor, dirt-caked fans, old stained towels, a dusty lampshade and headboard, cracked moldy shower tiles, and damp walls. An electric plug hung out of the wall, neither lamp worked, and the safe required a key. We provided photo evidence. When we asked at reception to speak to the manager the next morning, we were told she had the day off and the owners lived in Florida. The person we spoke with was unhelpful when we said we were unhappy. The location is also affected by customers leaving The Fallen Stag pub/nightclub about 20 m away around 5 or 5:30 a.m., singing and shouting loudly. Beer bottles were left all over the road in the morning. The hotel is surrounded by metal bars everywhere.

I can't understand why G Advebtures puts this hotel on its “top seller” 16-day tour. It's totally unacceptable and a joke. The first room we were offered had two beds, neither with fresh sheets. We asked for another room and learned housekeeping hadn't changed them. That room was gross too, with a filthy bathroom and stained walls throughout. Water, including hot water, came and went. It rained while we slept, and by morning the bathroom ceiling was dripping. This hotel is horrible.

It's about a 20-minute walk to San Jose's tourist area, though restaurants are closer. The rooms are run down, and Le Bergerac no longer lives up to the Boutique hotel name. We stayed at the start and end of our trip because we'd prepaid the second stay and couldn't cancel. On the first visit, the room hadn't been cleaned: there was hair on the sheets, only one towel for us as a couple, an uncontrollable ceiling fan, and mold on the ceiling. On the second, there were no towels, lamps, or TV, and the ceiling lights were very dim. When we asked for towels, we were initially given just one. Staff took lamps from other rooms when we asked for them. There was also a cockroach.

I spent three days here while joining a tour and felt completely ignored and unwelcome. My room had no glasses, and when I asked for one, I was told I'd have to pay. The rooms are large and nice, but breakfast was abysmal and the staff seemed totally disinterested. If you're on the second floor, you have to ask reception for help. I got no fresh towels during those three days, and there were notices posted everywhere instead of a warm welcome. Other members of my tour complained too, and the tour company changed its plans so we wouldn't have to return. The hotel has a lot of potential, but it needs to welcome guests and service the rooms. As an independent travel agent, I wouldn't recommend it. We traveled around CR afterward and found other hotels much more welcoming.

The noise was a problem all night: the doorbell kept ringing as guests came and went, and the room let everything through. People across from the villa were loud too, or maybe there was a club right opposite. Inside the room, the fan barely moved air and couldn't be turned up. The light bulbs were out, so I had to ask for bedside lamps. There were webs and mold on the bathroom ceiling, a cockroach ran by and we eventually killed it, and long hairs were on the pillowcase, which made us think the sheets hadn't been changed. We had to ask for a second bath towel despite there being two of us, and the toilet seat didn't match the commode. We skipped breakfast because we were already uneasy about the cleanliness and didn't trust that the kitchen would be any better.
