Lolas

I've been in and out of Costa Rica for nearly 10 years, and this is one of my favorite hostels I've stayed at. The shared spaces are bright and beautifully decorated, and the kitchen is really nice for cooking. The staff are kind, helpful, and thorough. Bedrooms and bathrooms were clean and comfortable, and the rooms have plenty of space. I'll keep staying here whenever I need a night in San Jose before or after a flight. Lots to like, and I'll be back soon!

Walking around the central area after dark didn't feel safe to me. The club noise was unbearable, even through earplugs, and after a certain hour I couldn't relax or sleep. Such a shame, because the place itself is clean, well kept, nicely decorated, and a bargain for what you get.

I've stayed here two years in a row, and the people are so friendly. Yana is a wonderful, helpful host, and the place is great. The large suite is absolutely worth the price for its size, view, and amenities. If you'd rather have a smaller room, they can accommodate that too, and all the rooms are nice. I'd definitely recommend staying here.

I picked a private room and bathroom, with the bathroom just down the hall, and as a solo traveler I felt safe. There's a double-door entrance, and both my room and bathroom had locks. The interior is adorable, with fun colors, a living room with cute pillows, books and games, plus a shared kitchen. The outside is pretty nondescript, and my Uber driver and I struggled to find it because we couldn't see a sign. Turn right when you head out and you're right in San Jose's Chinatown District. I hadn't expected that, but loved it since it reminded me of my beloved O'ahu. There are lots of tempting restaurants, dessert spots, and sweet drink places nearby. It was my first hostel stay and I enjoyed Lolas. Have WhatsApp ready, since that's how I kept in touch with Dyla, the woman looking after you here. I missed her first message because I didn't know, but she was kind, helpful, and quick to reply. It was quiet apart from a bird now and then singing a lovely tune and some outdoor noise. A great affordable place to stay :)
