Breakfast usually meant toast with butter and jam, cereal, milk, and bananas. The kitchen was great, though there was no microwave, and there was a nice semi-outdoor place to sit. The bunks were nice too, with a two-outlet plug at each one, enough to run a fan and charge one device, or charge two devices. Hope this detailed review helps, I'm trying to keep more Google Maps points than my boyfriend.

The vibe, cleanliness, breakfast, and location were all amazing. For a backpacker in Escalante today, this is by far the best option. Manager Fred is the best, even if he's strict. Follow the Hostel rules and understand order and respect, and this place is definitely a must visit in San Jose, Costa Rica. See you at Casa Escalante!

They were overbooked when we arrived, despite our advance reservation through hostel world, and had no space for us. We got there at night and ended up walking around San Jose looking for somewhere to sleep, which felt scary and unsafe. We were stranded, and the Hostel staff weren't sympathetic or apologetic. DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS HOSTEL.

Our Hostelworld booking wasn't in the hostel's system when we got there, though they were still happy to take our deposit through Hostelworld.

The bed was comfortable and had a privacy curtain, and the area felt safe with restaurants an easy walk away. The receptionist was very sweet and spoke Spanish clearly and slowly. We paid about $3 for an uber from the bus station from La Fortuna, and it was the same from the station for buses to Limón. Check which station you need, since different buses leave from different ones. Great value for money.
