Hotel Valle Verde

The town is fabulous, and the people are wonderful. The location was perfect.

Terrible experience. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, full stop.

The room was simple and comfortable, and the hotel food was tasty local fare. We got such a warm welcome from the family, and the morning we spent with them was wonderful. Luis took us around the large finca, with its old, big trees, trout hatchery, and beautiful home that he rents to small groups or families. The farm looks out over the valley and the coffee plantations on the surrounding mountains. He also showed us the family coffee plantation and the large processing operation that serves many local coffee farms in the valley. Luis and his wife Cynthia have deep family roots in Santa Maria de Dota, and their knowledge of the community and coffee production made the tour really interesting. He was generous with his time, and I enjoyed talking with him about important ideas. He and Cynthia have also written an interesting book about becoming the best version of yourself. Later, Luis took us to a cousin's fruit orchard, where apples, plums, peaches, and avocados were growing. We rode a wagon through its different levels and got to pick various fruits to take with us. The family were all so friendly and helpful. In town, the coffee cooperative has its roasting plant in the center, along with a great cafe serving pastries and delicious coffee from the valley. It was a warm, fun visit, and we plan to come back and explore more. We recommend visiting this special area of Costa Rica. Thank you, Luis and Cynthia and children, for the wonderful hospitality and warm reception.

Luis showed us around his farm, and we learned a lot about coffee growing and processing at the mill. We also saw the cabin he rents on the property, with its breathtaking views. Next time, we hope to catch the sunrise from that wonderful balcony. The town sits in a stunning setting, and the hospitality from Luis, Cintia, and the rest of the family made us feel like we'd left friends behind. There is also a highly recommended restaurant attached to the hotel. We'll never forget the days we spent there.
