Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas

We chose Cala Luna partly because we expected a higher level of security and peace of mind, so what happened was especially disappointing. While my family was out on a tour, a cell phone, my daughter’s small jewelry box and belongings, and some clothing disappeared from our room. They had been there when we left. We reported it, and the staff apologized sincerely and said they would follow up after reviewing room access logs and cameras. I understand things can happen while traveling, but it was concerning at an expensive property. I’d advise future guests to take extra care with valuables and anything they’d mind losing, even clothes. Unfortunately, these things can happen at nice resorts too. The property itself is beautiful and relaxing, with excellent food and friendly staff. We were a family group of grandparents, my husband, and our children, ages 11 and 9, staying in a three-bedroom villa. We enjoyed the lovely setting, amazing sound baths, and being a little removed from Tamarindo.

The one thing I missed was a fitness center. For a wellness-focused place, that surprised me, and the yoga and functional fitness classes only happen occasionally. Otherwise, Cala Luna is a great property and I’d highly recommend it to anyone staying in Tamarindo. The modern rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I loved its oasis feel and how well the property fits into the surroundings, just a few minutes from Tamarindo’s activity. The food was amazing, and the handy details were appreciated, like several water stations and sunscreen and bug repellent for guests.

The food and drink were excellent throughout our stay. Everything is fresh and local from a nearby farm, and you can tell the chef has worked at Michelin-starred restaurants. The pool and facilities were great too, with everything we could want. It was our first trip to Costa Rica and Tamarindo, and Cala Luna made it a wonderful one. The place was extremely clean, with beach access to Playa Langosta and an easy walk to Playa Tamarindo, downtown restaurants, and shops. The staff were wonderful, friendly, and accommodating. We met several guests who return year after year, and hope to join them.

The hotel is in a quiet, very safe part of Tamarindo, away from the downtown buzz. You can walk or bike to the center, either on the road or along the beach at low tide. The resort grounds are gorgeous, and our suite was fantastic and really spacious. Breakfast was delicious, with local dishes like gallo pinto, plus pancakes and eggs if you prefer. Staff were welcoming and professional, and the complimentary sunset cocktail on the beach each day was a lovely extra. Lunch or dinner at the restaurant is a bit pricey, though the food is amazing and they accommodate food allergies. The yoga teacher adjusts for all levels. Just a heads-up, Scott’s functional workout is quite intense ☺️. The homemade mosquito repellent is magic, so I bought a bottle for the rest of our stay in Cosa Rica!
