Hotel ALFONSKA

The food was a bright spot, with excellent breakfast and dinner, and the staff were always smiling and helpful. We spent a long weekend at Alfonska Hotel without checking the reviews first. We wanted half board by the ski slope, and that's what we got. Time does seem to have stood still here, though. The hotel needs work on things like the ski storage room and windows. If all you need is ordinary accommodation by the slope, it'll do.

The hotel's location was great, and there was a nice chef who made what we asked for, though the food was average. We stayed about five years ago, and looking at the current reviews, not much seems to have changed. The building manager who greeted us was nice, but the room was very basic, with old furniture, light dirt, and cobwebs. The waiter/receptionist didn't take his job seriously and drank local alcohol with friends, who could be heard loudly throughout the room. When we needed help with a broken window, three drunk young men came and fixed it. If that kind of anarchy is still going on, I definitely wouldn't recommend a visit.

The surroundings were lovely, especially the Žalý lookout tower and the walks nearby. The staff had left, though, and both tried to be nice and accommodating. Some of us looked forward to using the pool, but it had only a few centimeters of green water, with bits of wood, metal, and plastic floating in it. Others expected the promised ping-pong table, but it had been moved to a better place in Harrachov. We didn't even look for the jacuzzi. Based on the reviews, we hadn't expected much, but several rooms had broken heating, one had a cracked window, and another had a TV that didn't work properly. Tuning the TV to get decent channels beyond the Prima stations made Prima disappear and brought in Nova, ČT, and others instead. In another room, tuning added six German channels, but there was no sound, the picture flickered, and most of the time the screen was black.
