Hotel Modrava

Right in the heart of the Šumava Mountains, this is a good hotel for a more than reasonable price. The timber building is attractive, and it’s the first one you come to on the road from Srní. The restaurant has a nice range of tasty classics. I’d especially recommend the so-called "Kočičák", a mixture made with duck meat. Their 12° Pilsner Urquell is probably the best in Modrava. We were treated very well.

The food is amazing and the location is good, but the rooms leave something to be desired. The staff and customer service were horrible. A booking error meant we were supposed to pay twice as much for one night. The receptionist was immediately rude and aggressive, said it wasn’t his problem, and insisted there was nothing he could do. We asked for the manager, who was at home. He called her, but she wouldn’t speak to us. We could hear her saying she didn’t want to talk to us and that he should just repeat what she’d said. In the end, our time in Sumava was spoiled by a greedy hotel that wouldn’t even try to work with us on a solution.

We stayed in the bright, very nice attic apartment at this lovely traditional mountain hotel. The one real issue was the lack of curtains, which made it hard to get the kids to sleep at 20.00. The kitchen serves traditional Czech food. I loved the Kulajda, and the Aperol Spritz was the best in town, big and tasty. The kids aren’t fans of Czech food, so they even made them special pasta. Five stars for the service, friendliness, and support. I wish hotel Modrava many good years ahead!

There’s plenty of room in the bike storage area, and our room was clean. We had very little space for clothes, though, just a few hangers in the closet. Still, a very nice hotel.
