The biggest issue was how much of the guest experience was left for guests to manage. I had to contact them for the Wi-Fi details, to ask for garbage to be emptied, to report that a plant was dying, and to find out about checkout. They never checked in to see how things were going. Communication and a pleasant stay seemed to be treated as the guest's responsibility. Wi-Fi was so poor that I tried working from both the shared lobby sitting area, where the bar and reception desk used to be, and the shared chairs on my floor. This no longer felt like a real hotel. It seemed to be an apartment rental business still using the Boutique Hotel 16 name for “consistency.” From what I could tell, Boutique Hotel 16 had been a well-liked family-run hotel, then a real estate or development company bought and remodeled it. They seemed to rely on technology to avoid hiring staff who could actually help. They called the business an ApartHotel but kept the Boutique Hotel 16 name. That explanation didn't make sense to me, especially since the website was taken down and the photos were outdated. There was no bar, food room, reception, or staff. The former food room had become a rental unit, and I saw a man lying on a bed there from the street. Getting in was a hassle too. You had to use an app or email the property, whoever “they” were, to get a code for the front door and your room. They seemed to assume you'd know which of the two keypads at the entrance to use. The whole process of registering, checking in, and getting the codes depended on apps and technology. My single room was absurdly tiny, more like a well-furnished broom closet with barely any room to move. You won't find photos of my top-floor solo-traveler room on Booking.com, which seemed to be their preferred site. It should have had a single bed because it really couldn't handle a full or queen bed. There were a few upsides: the place was clean, the furniture was nice, and the room had a refrigerator, desk, electric kettle, and a big TV with two or three lame English-language channels. It's about a 30-minute walk to Old Town, and public transport still involves a fair walk to reach. Be ready for the steps or learn the transit system.
The renovation made the stay miserable. Hammering and drilling started at 9 AM and went on until 6 PM, with dust in the air and smells of smoke and paint that seemed like they could be a health hazard. I had booked two non-refundable nights and couldn't have handled any longer. I hadn't been told about the hotel's condition or the missing facilities when I booked. There was no reception, bar lounge, or breakfast service, despite what had been advertised, and no hotel staff. A six-digit code was sent to open both the front door and my room. The room was very drab. It had no bedspread, just a bare duvet, and the pictures had been taken off the walls. Toiletries amounted to liquid hand soap, and there were no tea or coffee sachets for the kettle. It was unacceptable not to disclose this state of the hotel.
A nice hotel with the facilities you need. I just wish there were a fridge in the room for keeping drinks cold.
There wasn't a reception in the building, which would have been fine if the entry codes worked. The first code wouldn't open our room, and customer service took ages to respond. The cleaning lady couldn't get the door open either. A new code finally worked after about ten minutes. On the second day we were locked out again. I texted and called customer service for ten minutes, but they weren't reachable during the day. They eventually answered, sent the cleaning lady, and she still couldn't open the door. Another code failed too. Only the third one worked. That time we spent 20 minutes stuck outside. I tried to check out and get a refund, but they refused. A manager wasn't available to speak with me. Customer service acted as though it was my fault and that I, unlike the cleaning lady, couldn't handle the door. They were arrogant and hung up. Terrible attitude.
The back garden is lovely for having tea in the evening, and the neighborhood is very quiet. I stayed twice for about a week each time over the summer, and the service was phenomenal on both visits. The staff are great representatives of their city and country. This is the only place I'd stay in Prague. If you're American and want a Czech hotel with AC and helpful staff, this place is a godsend.
