The location was the one bright spot: the train takes you straight to the center of Železná Ruda, and the evening walk toward the German side is lovely. The building and room, though, were awful. The elevator smelled so strongly that we took the stairs, where we had to duck under red tape marked “no entry, restaurant closed” just to reach our room. We’d expected clean, ordinary accommodation from the Booking reviews, but the place felt like a hostel for Ukrainian workers. The room stank and was dirty, and the bathrooms were worse: filthy rags lying around, cobwebs everywhere, dead bugs, a disgusting sticky toilet, and dust that looked a century old. We couldn’t bring ourselves to sleep in the bedding, so we used our own sleeping bags. That made the extra 150 CZK charge for “bed linen” pretty funny. We stayed the last two nights of our Šumava trip with my husband. We’re never coming back.
