Hotel am Marschiertor

I asked to move into a room for two, but the manager wouldn’t even hear me out. Since I’d booked a one person room, I was told I had to stay in it (?!). Looking at other reviews here too, they really need to learn some customer service.

The reception was excellent, and breakfast was good. The room was very good too, though I don’t think a transparent door for the toilet was a good choice.

There are several small restaurants nearby, with different kinds of food, and the breakfast was good quality for a reasonable price. The front desk staff were friendly, helpful, and spoke good English. Free tea and coffee in thermos kettles in the lobby was a nice touch. It’s a budget-friendly hotel within a short walk of Aachen’s main train station, though dragging luggage over the cobblestones in the front park can be tricky. They let us leave our bags both before check-in and after check-out, which worked well with our flexible plans. We even did a day trip to Cologne on check-out day. The hotel has four floors. There’s an old, small but functional elevator, though it only reaches the third floor. Rooms on the fourth floor have a balcony, a nice bonus for fresh air, especially as there’s no air conditioning. The rooms were well ventilated, and the bathrooms clean and in good condition.

The rooms are a little dated, but the staff are very nice and helpful. You can walk to the city center, and there’s a good range of different restaurants nearby.
