I’m already looking forward to returning next year. I first visited the Riedelbauch family in Kleinwendern in April 2025 to try alkaline fasting. The hotel sits peacefully on the edge of the village in the Fichtel Mountains, right by several hiking trails. My room was clean, rustic, and comfortable, and the spa area was a lovely little place to relax. Mrs. Riedelbauch’s treatments and massages were heavenly. The alkaline full board was the highlight: Mr. Riedelbauch made fantastic meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and they were always a feast for the eyes too.

I’ve been coming to this country hotel once or twice a year for many years, and it always gives me the peace and quiet I’m looking for. Mrs. Riedelbauch and her husband welcome me warmly and are always ready to hear any questions or requests. I enjoy the excellent alkaline food and range of wellness treatments, and the beautiful countryside adds to the relaxing break. As the year ends, I want to thank the Riedelbauch family. I’m already looking forward to next year’s visit and wondering what new things I’ll discover.

The only guests who seem to get friendly, courteous service at this country inn are the longtime regulars, many of whom come for alkaline fasting. We were new guests and felt completely ignored. At check-in, the owner handed us a room key and asked whether we wanted dinner, with no greeting or general information. Our room was old, with mattresses that hardly seemed like mattresses. We managed to move, but the next room wasn’t much better. The furniture smelled musty, the curtains and carpet seemed not to have been cleaned in ages, and there was very little care evident. Room service came only every two days. The bathroom was cleaned with such horrible chemicals that we had to air out the room before we could go in. Breakfast was pitifully sparse: just 2-3 slices of sausage and cheese, and one roll per person. Apart from a brief “good morning,” the owner’s only interaction with us was bringing coffee to the table. We didn’t exchange another word with him all week, even when we crossed paths in the hallway. Leaving was as dispiriting as arriving. Once we paid, that was the end of contact, with no questions, no “safe journey home,” and not even a “goodbye.” I can understand that running a hotel and keeping up with modern conveniences may be harder when you’re older and have no successors. But treating guests with such indifference and stinginess, ruining their holiday, and charging exorbitant prices is a no-go. Dear Riedelbauch family, you should be ashamed. Sell the hotel and give Kleinwendern and its other guests the chance to develop and realize their potential. I can’t recommend this hotel to anyone. It’s such a shame, because Kleinwendern is a beautiful place with many great highlights and hiking trails.

The setting is so quiet, right at the edge of town with meadows and woods in view. I really liked the varied alkaline fasting meals, and the massages and facial treatment impressed me too. The friendly, family feel made me comfortable, and the price felt very fair.

The online picture of this hotel was very different from what we experienced. My girlfriend and I got the lunch time wrong and missed the meal, then in the evening they served us the food from lunchtime. They'd also left a pitcher on our table from lunch. Its contents looked like soup, though it was supposed to be water. I still can't believe hosts would treat guests this way. Disappointing.
