Landhaus Helmboldt

The place felt like a museum, and not in a good way. Everything was dark and musty, we felt as if we were the only guests, and there was no staff in sight. Although our Booking.com reservation included breakfast, the owner said the apartment price didn’t cover it. We couldn’t reach an agreement, so we left straight away. It may have deserved four stars decades ago, but it’s nowhere near that standard now. We can’t fully agree with the positive reviews.

We had a wonderful time at this lovely country house. The room was excellent and breakfast had everything you could want. Dinner was delicious too, especially the roast beef with chanterelles and vegetables. Our hostess was welcoming and very friendly. We highly recommend staying here.

The setting at the end of the valley in the Steina district, just outside Bad Sachsa, is wonderfully quiet and surrounded by nature. The garden is almost a little park. Our stay was relaxing and the price-performance ratio excellent. The photos online are a bit old, by the way ;-). This is a country-house-style hotel, so modern amenities aren’t really the focus. Our room was a good size with lots of storage, something that’s often missing in newer hotels. The hostess still works here with dedication in a traditional way, and the staff were always friendly and helpful. We also recommend dinner at the hotel, the three-course meal was excellent each time. Calling it a wellness hotel might be a stretch. The sauna is quite small, and there’s also a steam room and two whirlpools, but you need to arrange to use them in advance. Wi-Fi is available, though it seems limited. Mobile coverage from D2 & O2 isn’t great at the end of the valley, so guests depend on it.

So peaceful and beautiful here, both the surroundings and the accommodation. The service is really friendly, and the food is always freshly made and absolutely delicious. If you love a quiet place, you’ll like it. We’d love to come back.
