Hotel Café Lieb

The room wasn’t luxurious, but it was clean and the bed was incredibly comfortable. We only stayed one night, and the old house had lots of charm. Getting to the old town takes about a 35-minute walk through a park beside the river. That route isn’t lit at night, so bear that in mind.

We’ve stayed here six times, I think, and Klaus and Kate have always been wonderful hosts. The hotel sits beside the river in a nice little village, though it’s a 40-minute walk into the city. The restaurant serves good German and Thai food, and the outdoor cafe has ice cream and cakes. It was built originally as a hunting lodge for the Price Bishop of Bamberg. On our first visit in 1990, the small hotel was quite worn; most rooms have since been renovated and now have baths.

The Thai food was lovely, and we stayed for one night. I’ve given four stars because the price felt a little high for what you get with a shared bathroom.

The river view was really nice, and breakfast had good-quality food. The hotel was very clean, the rooms were lovely, and the staff were kind.
