City Guesthouse Pension Berlin

We stayed in room 7, which I'm pretty sure used to be a storage space. It was extremely humid and on the ground floor, right by the main door. The windows opened onto the innenhof, where people in the building park their bikes and put trash in the bins, so you hear everyone coming and going, everything. The bathroom was the strangest thing I've seen. The toilet was right beside the bed, separated by an incredibly thin, semi-transparent door with no ventilation. You could hear, smell, and almost see everything when someone was in there. Who thought that was a good idea? It felt like a clear rip-off. The bath was behind that same bed, built into the wall. Very weird, though at least it had ventilation.

The room was tiny, but clean and reasonably priced. The reception and cleaning staff were extraordinarily friendly. I'd strongly recommend eating at the attached Chinese restaurant.

We were so lucky to find this pension in Berlin while my friend and I were traveling around Europe on a budget. The room had what we needed, a bed, small desk, built-in closet space, TV, coffeemaker, and a fridge/freezer. It was small but clean, and the bathroom was clean too, with fantastic shower pressure. Towels and amenities were provided, and they cleaned the room every day. We knew from earlier reviews that the owners also ran the Chinese restaurant next door, and that reception followed the restaurant's hours. It wasn't open 24/7, and leaving baggage wasn't an easy option. We checked in at 3pm, were shown to the room, and got physical keys for both the front door and our room. When the ceiling fan wouldn't run with the overhead light off, they quickly came to check it. They couldn't fix it, but I asked about a standing fan and they brought one back within minutes. Check-out was quick and easy, just leave the key on the table in the room at 11am. There are fantastic restaurants and breakfast spots nearby, and the train and bus stations are a short walk away. You'll want public transport to get to the monuments and such. The owners were amazing, and this was one of the best places we stayed during the Europe trip. We ate at their restaurant on check-in night. You need a reservation because the food is made to order, but it was delicious, some of the best crispy duck I've ever had. I'd 100% recommend staying and eating here again.

If you're mostly looking for somewhere to sleep while exploring Berlin, this place is fine, somewhere in the middle. The location was a real plus for me. Walk about five minutes and there are lots of cool shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants. Reception is in a restaurant, and the rooms are through a gate in a building with lots of apartments. They're okay, with a soft bed, coffee maker, internet access, and a small fridge for whatever you want to put in it.
