The pool was the one real highlight. With a bit of planning, you could have it to yourself, and it’s fine for swimming and splashing around. There’s a toilet and two showers there. I couldn’t get hold of the apartment manager, who gave us the key, by phone to air my frustration. When we returned the key, I raised these problems again and she said she’d pass them on. I think I’ll email the owner as well. The apartment was a mess. We had to do a thorough clean when we arrived: dog hair on the sofa and living room floor, human hair on the bedroom bed edge, dust in the Murphy bed corners, and dirty trim. I vacuumed and wiped things with glass cleaner, then vacuumed the whole place again because the vacuum smelled awful. The bed squeaked with every small movement. The sofa was stained, and crumbs fell out when we folded a backrest down, so we had to clean again. There are 14 apartments in the building but only around 7-8 marked parking spaces out front. The rest of us have to park on the street. In the bedroom, the curtains are still torn and the normal light switch doesn’t work, though the switch at the back does. The hallway light works. The bathroom fan is still broken, and the living room door still won’t close properly. The new laminate flooring creaks badly in the living room and hall, so a quiet trip to the bathroom at night is impossible. The bathroom is cramped, and its outlet is 110V, so the hairdryer can only be used in the living room or bedroom. The kitchen has plenty of dishes, but of the promised dishwasher tablets there was one, left in a dirty cleaning bucket. There were no dish towels. We couldn’t take out the rubbish because the outside bin was locked and we had no key. The Wi-Fi worked right away. The living room cabinet is still partly locked, and the open spaces are cluttered with decorations, some games, and books, all without much care. The balcony furniture was meant to make the balcony good for breakfast or sunbathing. We only cleaned the table and chairs so we could sit there and dry towels, and chose to eat breakfast in the living room instead. I reread the website description and got furious. There was nothing loving about the place, and hardly anything charming or Harz-like, unlike other apartments in the Harz Mountains. There were no welcome notes or instructions, only directions for connecting to Wi-Fi. There was a huge flat-screen TV in the living room, a bonus we didn’t need. The construction site right outside the door made things worse, though the landlord couldn’t be blamed for that. We’re just glad to be home for a quiet night, without squeaky beds and cracking laminate. This is the worst accommodation we’ve had in the Harz Mountains so far. We agree with Henry Stefan’s review and wish we’d seen it first. Seeing that the apartment owner gave himself five stars was outrageous.

The bathroom needs more than one towel hook for a place that sleeps up to five, and there should be somewhere to leave wet shoes. Those details fit the general impression that this apartment wasn’t prepared to feel welcoming. The online description promised a lovingly furnished, newly renovated place, but there were torn or missing curtains, padlocks on the living room cabinet, cupboard doors with loose hinges that wouldn’t shut, a broken sofa-bed backrest adjuster, screws sticking out of the Murphy bed, a living room door that wouldn’t close, and lights that didn’t work. The renovation seems to have meant creaky laminate, fresh paint on the walls, and new bedroom furniture. Paint is peeling from the windows, most door frames are badly scratched, and ventilation in both the bathroom and kitchen doesn’t work properly. The hallway lights didn’t work, and the Wi-Fi connection was unreliable. It didn’t feel like much effort had gone into offering guests a comfortable stay.

The bedroom looks recently renovated, while the rest of the apartment feels worn but cozy, as is typical for the Harz region. Unfortunately, several lights were broken in the hall, bedroom, and fridge, and the kitchen lighting only works for someone who’s sensitive to bright light. Floor lamps can provide a little more light. The TV was there but didn’t work. We were told about the swimming pool closure only after booking, before arrival, and were given the reason that it was closed due to the Corona pandemic. That doesn’t seem true: the door had a sign saying it was closed due to a technical defect, and another explained pool use for guests under Corona conditions. To find the apartment, look for a sticker on one of the doors rather than the names on the doorbells. The advertised dolce Gusto welcome package was a used capsule in the machine. “Toilet paper provided” meant one sheet left on the roll. It was particularly disappointing that our question about this was ignored. Looking at the other reviews, this seems to happen often.

The location was great, and aside from the cleanliness issues, the accommodation was good. The weather was so-so, though of course that’s out of anyone’s control. We’d been looking forward to the pool, but it didn’t look inviting, so we left our swimwear in the suitcase.

It’s very quiet, right at the upper edge of town, and the apartment is spacious and lovely. Everything listed in the amenities was there, and contacting the management was easy and pleasant.
