The Deutz, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel

The party in the room across the hall was the worst part of our stay. Loud music, drunk people and chaos in the corridor carried on from 10 pm until 3:30 am, even though we had an early flight and called reception several times asking for help. Nobody did anything, and there was no apology or concern. The bathroom was filthy, with visible stains and mold, and the noise insulation was so poor that we could hear toilets flushing in rooms above and beside us. We were also charged €25 a day for minibar use, but the minibar was completely empty. The agreed room price was exceeded as well, supposedly because of city taxes, which would have been understandable on its own. These charges felt dishonest. Getting to the city center was inconvenient, with a walk to the station, a train ride, another walk and a further train or underground connection. For an upscale property carrying the Marriott name, this was nowhere near the standard I expected. I would stay elsewhere.

The worst issue was the bar one evening. Two men who weren't guests, but were friends of the bartender, made a huge racket in the hotel. That wasn't acceptable, especially since they weren't staying there. I also couldn't find any managers downstairs whenever I went to speak with one. We stayed three nights in October as a couple. The room fridges didn't work. They offered us two rooms at check-in, but neither fridge worked, though they did let us use the bar fridge. We weren't told when booking that the restaurant would be closed for the first two nights because it had been busy the previous weekend. With no restaurants nearby, guests should have been warned. The free drink vouchers were no use either, since there was no staff for the first two nights. The gym was being refurbished, and there was no notice on the booking website. With nowhere nearby to work out, I found that unacceptable. Some of these issues weren't major on their own, but as a Marriott Rewards member who travels often, this was one of my worst Marriott stays for this class of hotel. I won't return.

After a long journey, I arrived and immediately felt at peace. Mariella and Anas made that possible, and I'm so grateful to them. Their care is what sets a good hotel apart from an excellent one.

My impression was mixed. The room was clean, new and well laid out, and the staff were responsible. Check-in, though, was very slow, and they might want to add another staff member. There was also an interruption to the hot water.
