Burghaus & Villa Kronenburg

The second room we were moved to was nice, and the area around the hotel can make for a memorable stay. The rest was disappointing. Our first room, up in the loft, didn’t match what the travel agency had arranged, and the heater wasn’t working properly. I heard from two other guests who had the same problem in another room. I waited at the front desk for 30 minutes to get moved; it was usually unattended, with a note telling guests to call a number. I tried, but it went straight to voicemail. The hotel felt cold in winter, without a welcoming atmosphere. The wellness area was rather dirty and hadn’t been properly stocked, with no towels or water. Housekeeping made the bed and replaced our towels, but the toilet paper wasn’t replenished, and the tissue box still had only two tissues. I couldn’t tell whether that was forgotten or intentional. There’s no in-house restaurant. Breakfast wasn’t up to the standard of a four-star hotel, and neither was the service. Staff refilled the drink dispensers with bottled juice in front of guests, and took away a plate with food before asking whether the guest was finished.

Albert was a warm, helpful host who speaks several languages, and the small staff were friendly. The breakfast buffet was delicious, and the wellness area, though small, was clean and relaxing. The village feels like a step back in history. This is the kind of rustic hotel I expected, authentic and cozy. I’ve seen complaints from people expecting to be treated like royalty, but I felt Burghaus was doing what it could to make our stay pleasant. I’d recommend it.

The location in the old town around the Kronenburg castle area is excellent, and the hotel was clean, with friendly staff and a good breakfast. The rooms, though, are very small, with a particularly narrow bed. For what you get, including an old small television, basic furniture, and not even a table, the price feels high.

Parking was downhill from the castle area, so you need to walk up or take the shuttle. The Kronenburg Christmas Market itself was cozy and lovely, with little stands set up inside the houses. It was also good that the food stalls were outside the inner village and castle area. Everyone was very nice, and I’d definitely come back.
