The experience begins as soon as you walk through the restaurant's historic doors. From the owners to the staff, the service is impeccable. The varied menu shows the kitchen's skill and care, with freshness, artistry and atmosphere all coming through. European cuisine at its very best. Perfect for a celebration or for enjoying local seasonal food.

The wine selection is incredible. Their four-course dinner began with pigeon gelatin and a green sauce, and I loved it. The strong meat aromas against those green, herbal flavours were exactly the sort of thing I'd missed so much in the New World. An amazing restaurant, like the essence of the Rheingau.

The setting has real old-building character, so the rooms aren't on the same comfort level as a Hilton. The restaurant, though, serves upscale German food and has a very good range of local wines.

We were told to find somewhere child-friendly, which was a pretty awful response. We were eight people, including two cute kids, and they wouldn't seat us because they said they couldn't handle a group that size. There were three waitresses and only two tables occupied. I wouldn't recommend coming here.
