Trautwein - Das Winzerhotel am La Roche

We came for dinner and left disappointed, especially with how gluten-free options were handled. The menu lists several dishes, but the fine print says many "may contain" gluten. I picked the gyros because it was marked gluten-free, then after I ordered, staff told me I had to swap the chips because they weren't safe. I ordered a salad instead, but they had no dressing that made sense with gyros, so I asked for a lemon slice. It came covered in grime from the chopping board, which made it unsafe. My dish arrived without the salad, and I had to ask for it. The salad itself was sad, with no seasonal or regional products. For a restaurant that caters to people with chosen food restrictions, it seemed odd to me how little care there was for those whose limitations come from bad luck. Poor form, and a letdown.

The staff were friendly, the room was very clean, and the service was fine. The location works well for a vacation, though it wasn't the best fit for my business trip. The road leading to the hotel needs renovation.

I came back a second time because the food is so good, and it's all vegan. The flammkuchen with gyros and the moussaka were both truly great. On my first visit I stayed just one night and had a great dinner on Monday evening, with flammkuchen and local wine. The room was spacious and clean, and the vegan breakfast buffet was a dream. I'll be back for a longer stay!

A peaceful little oasis with good food and a great view. They make their own wine, and the place has a relaxed, informal feel. If you're lucky, you wake up to a beautiful sky in the morning. The vegan food is awesome, but I'd recommend this place even if you're not vegan.
