The location is fantastic, with beautiful surroundings, friendly and helpful neighbors, and plenty to explore within an hour's drive. We visited Freiburg, the Rhine Falls in Switzerland, and Lake Constance. Unfortunately, the apartment we booked through Booking.com was by far the worst vacation rental we've experienced in 18 years of traveling this way. We wouldn't recommend it to anyone, and if I owned or operated it, I'd be truly embarrassed to rent it in this condition. We booked the first-floor apartment for a long weekend over Pentecost. The Booking.com pictures are completely outdated, and the place is incredibly run-down. Most of the furniture is old and filthy. The two sofas were stained all over, disgusting to sit on, and certainly not suitable for sleeping. Who knows what germs were on them. The wooden floor was badly worn, with large gaps and loose boards throughout, creating a risk of injury, especially for children. Windows were dirty and smeared with handprints, the apartment was far from clean, and some towels were stained. The dining cushions were filthy, while the table and chairs were worn. Garden furniture had food scraps on it and was otherwise uninviting. There was only one key to the front door, when at least two would be standard, and the landlord couldn't provide a spare. We were told to contact a locksmith. The house is noisy and smells musty, old, and damp. The kitchenette and bathrooms were in decent condition, though not exactly clean. Customer service responses could be very slow, and different people replied, each needing to be briefed on the earlier issues. We're used to much better service.
