AHORN Berghotel Friedrichroda

The panorama room had an amazing view, and the staff were exceptionally friendly. Our family had a really nice stay, with plenty for the kids to do, from the pool and indoor and outdoor playgrounds to the cinema and climbing park. The rooms were as expected for a three-star hotel. The food was the letdown: none of the bread at breakfast or dinner tasted fresh, and as a vegetarian I found little beyond pasta or potatoes. The general food quality could be better.

There are loads of activities for children, and the food quality was good. Vegan and vegetarian choices were available at breakfast and dinner, though not at lunch. We had two kids and couldn't keep their milk cold because there was no minibar in the room. The rooms weren't great quality, there was no air conditioning, and not having prams available was really bad for us with a three-month-old.

The indoor playground was grim and disappointing for a family hotel. Elsewhere, the facilities were generally clean and the service was good, but the hotel's age shows throughout, including a faint but noticeable smell. Food was okay, nothing special. It felt very average, with a few highs and lows, and the value for the price was barely acceptable.

We arrived this afternoon with our big family group of 15. The reception team were fantastic, and the room was clean. The room was okay, and the service was good. I thought the hotel was five-star great when we first arrived, and everything else has been really comfortable. It would be even better with a welcome drink and a kettle in the room, so we could make tea during these cold days. This isn't our first family visit, my parents come here for a holiday nearly every year. I'll definitely come back and choose this hotel again.
