Sunday Hotel and Spa Wismar

There isn't much around the hotel since it's tucked behind an industrial estate. Parking also costs €5, so keep that in mind. We paid 28€ each for a meal, but went into town to Sadhu instead and had a great meal for a lot less. Breakfast was decent, with plenty to choose from. The hotel badly needs updating, and while we were there it was full of bus tours. We felt about 200 yrs too young!

The rooms were comfortable, though dated, and there was no tea, coffee, or nice personal touches like body lotion. The spa area wasn't anything special either. What really made the stay difficult was the lack of helpful service. I don't speak German, and all the guest information was in German, so I had to translate it myself. Staff spoke very little English and didn't seem very friendly. When I went to the front desk after checking the sauna, I realized I needed 2 euros for the spa. The gentleman told me I couldn't just come in and use it, rather than first asking whether I was a guest. Once that was sorted, I asked when the restaurant was open. He said it wouldn't be open that night or the next, and that I had to book, but didn't offer to make a reservation. I was tired after being out all day, so I had to go to the shops up the road. I spent a long time trying to get an uber in the lobby before asking him to call a taxi. He just said the shops were a 10 minute walk away. I would've been fine walking on another day, but I'd been out in the cold and snow all day and was exhausted. It was dark too, which felt unsafe for a woman alone. I got the impression staff were tired and unenthusiastic, and only wanted to do the bare minimum. I wouldn't stay again.

The friendly, helpful staff, comfortable large double bed, and good parking were the best parts. Breakfast was okay, although the cooked food, Bacon Beans and Sausages, was cold on our last morning. The bathroom needed attention: there was mould on the shower wall and around the glass door, the shower head leaked, and the toilet was cracked. The net curtains needed washing, and the TV remote's power button didn't work. During our 4-day stay the room wasn't cleaned, and despite the notice saying towels left on the floor would be changed, ours were still wet on the floor. They do have a pool and training room, but I wouldn't call this a 4 star hotel. I expected more from a 4* place.

The corridors looked a little dated and could use a makeover, and we didn't have dinner there. But the room was clean and very nice, the bed was comfortable, and breakfast was super. Most of all, the staff were brilliant: friendly, helpful, and very service minded. We had trouble charging our electric car, and the reception team went well beyond what we expected, eventually helping us get electricity from the hotel. We're very grateful, thank you so much. We stayed at Wyndham Garden Hotel from 1st to 4th December 2022. It's centrally located, not far from Wismar center, in an industrial area that didn't bother us. We'll see you again.
