MB Hotel Weißer Hirsch

The hotel is centrally located and seemed to be the only place serving drinks after 8pm. We’d gone out hoping to enjoy the town at sunset and find dinner near the castle, but learned that restaurants in the area close at 7:30pm, even on weekends. Google’s opening hours need updating. There are no grocery stores or takeout places either, so we were grateful when the friendly staff made us fries and salad at 8pm and saved the first night of our holiday. They couldn’t offer meat or cheese, and the kitchen was clearly being cleaned, but the food was freshly made, not leftovers. The salads were somewhat overpriced, and an extra glass of wine was added to the bill. After the staff had helped us out, I didn’t feel like arguing. I can’t comment on a regular stay, but I wanted to recognize their willingness to help.

The menu’s short, which can be fine when dishes are made with care, but this one had lots of spelling mistakes and the choices weren’t appealing. We got fries instead of potatoes, and limp salad instead of vegetables. It had no dressing and looked straight out of the bag. The food really wasn’t good. It’s a shame, since the location is prime and the place could do well with the right cuisine.

Service was okay, but the food was awful for the price, and the meat didn’t seem fresh. The salad was badly prepared too, with vegetables so sour they tasted like they’d been soaked in vinegar. The schnitzel fell apart as soon as I cut it, had a cardboard-like texture, and didn’t taste like chicken. The “meat” in the eierkuchen, or pancake/crepe dish, was the worst: it smelled like gone-off canned tuna and tasted awful.

The staff were very kind, and the service was very good. I enjoyed both breakfast and dinner, and the terrace is lovely. My room was on the hotel’s top floor beside the church tower, though, and the clocks started making noise early in the morning.
