Altdeutsches Gasthaus Roter Hirsch

The vintage feel is lovely, with beautiful, charming corners throughout, and we were warmly welcomed and shown to a seat upstairs. I had grillhaxe, grilled pork knuckle with sauerkraut. The pairing was great, and the sauerkraut had a refreshing hint of sweetness instead of the usual sourness. The mustard was divine. There were far too many potatoes for me to finish, which made me feel bad about the waste. If you don't have an XL appetite, tell the staff you'd like fewer potatoes.

On my first visit to Roter Hirsch, I had mixed grilled meats including beef, sausages, and chicken, with vegetables, potatoes, and mushroom sauce. It was absolutely delicious, really tasty, and the service was exceptional. I also had a glass of white wine. The place is over 500 years old and still has its charm. This has become my favorite restaurant in Jena, and there will be more reviews.

We're repeat guests and always stop here when we're in Jena. Carmen is a fantastic waitress, especially with kids, and we love her. Everything on the menu is so good, and the dumplings with wild meat are worth trying. The prices are very reasonable too. Highly recommended.

While working in Jena, I had a great traditional German meal here. The food was good quality, there was a great choice of drinks, and the atmosphere felt welcoming. When the locals realized we were from abroad, they struck up a conversation. It was a fantastic experience of a historic German guest house, and I'd definitely return if I'm in Jena again.
