The desserts were excellent, and the nearly empty dining room was quiet and had a view we enjoyed. Still, it was odd to be told we had to order a minimum number of portions. The waiter did let us order fewer, but only after some discussion and as an exception, which felt like unexpected pressure to increase turnover. Aside from that, we had a good experience, and the place seemed well prepared.

The waitress tried to clear my plate while I was still eating. Really awful service. If you want your special day spoiled, book this restaurant.

Our anniversary dinner at Scala Jena started with a small mix-up in the third course, which briefly dampened the mood. The chef came over in person to apologize, and the staff stayed kind, sincere, and attentive, so they handled it well and the evening recovered into something lovely, with warmth and laughter. I chose the vegetarian five-course menu, and the second course was unforgettable: the Banyuls Karotten Sashimi was fantastic, as was the Basilikum Artischocke mit Trüffel. Even the butter with fresh bread reminded me of my grandmother's cooking. It felt nostalgic and refined at once. Those flavors and the thoughtful hospitality made it a night we'll remember.

My wine merchant in town suggested this place, so I went for lunch one Monday in early August 2024. It's on the top floor of the Jena tower, with a view over the city, and the value for money was great. I had Asian-inspired halibut, one of the best versions of this delicate fish I've tasted, even compared with Iceland. The wine list is very good too, and the glass of Spätburgunder I had was excellent.
