Mercure Hotel Kamen Unna

The hotel is a bit outside the city, and getting there by public transport took longer than I expected. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the staff were friendly and helpful.

The hotel restaurant served tasty food, and breakfast had a good range of choices. I also liked unwinding at the lobby bar in the evening. The fitness center was a bonus, though it could be a bit bigger. At the Mercure Hotel Kamen Unna, check-in was smooth and the staff were friendly and professional. The location near the highway worked well for a stopover or a visit to Dortmund. My room was clean, modern, and well equipped, with a comfortable bed and a nice work area. It was quiet enough for a restful night, the Wi-Fi was reliable, and the air conditioning worked well. Some parts of the service could have been more attentive, which is why I’m giving four stars instead of five. I was still very happy with my stay, would recommend it to business travelers or anyone wanting a comfortable stop near Dortmund, and would stay here again.

We won’t stay again. We left feeling the hotel wasn’t willing to spend on its guests, while charging top dollar, and the whole experience left a bad taste. The bathroom needs a serious refurbishment. The toilet seat was urine stained and chipped, which was disgraceful, and the sink had a stain that looked like someone had put out a cigarette on it. There were also issues with the bar: from outside it looked closed because the lights were off. We asked if it was open, were told yes, and ordered two very nice drinks, but then sat in the dark until I asked for the lights to be switched on. Less than 20 minutes later a large group arrived and ordered drinks. An inviting, lit bar can help business, after all. Saving a few euros on electricity isn’t much use if you sell no beer. My husband said breakfast was good, and for the price charged I’d hope it was more than good. The hotel is on an industrial park, not in the town center, so I found it irritating to pay a €15 parking fee when there’s no other way to get there. If they insist on charging it, they should include it in the overnight tariff. Otherwise it feels like a rip-off.

The room was bright, clean, and comfortable, and despite being just off the highway it was quiet. The staff were so friendly. I’d stay here again.
