Hotel am Karlstor

After a long day travelling, the welcome at Hotel am Karlstor was a real relief. The staff were warm, attentive and charming from the moment we arrived, and their quick, professional help made the place feel more like home than a hotel. Our room was spotless, spacious and thoughtfully decorated, and the bed was especially comfortable. Everything seemed well cared for. We left with a very good impression and will certainly come back for another stay.

The location is perfect if you want to stay in the city centre, but cleaning was poor. The room was old and dirty, and in five days it was cleaned only once. A hung towel had a stain on it. Cleaning seemed to mean making the bed and changing towels, with everything else left untouched. You should check inside the water boiler too.

The bed had mud and hair on it, and the room was missing even a fridge. One cup was broken, and there was a disgusting liquid in the kettle that smelled horrible. The washroom was awful too, with a broken toilet seat and hand shower. The door had no physical lock, even though staff had master keys. It was noisy everywhere. You could hear trams, conversations downstairs even from the fourth floor, and people shouting in the hallway. At night, there were shady people graffitiing the walls downstairs. The people who answered the phone were extremely rude and shouted a lot. Horrible hotel.

The room was nice and the staff were lovely and really helpful. We found plenty of space in the private car park when we visited, and the hotel is well located in the middle of Karlsruhe. It was a hot day, though, and without air conditioning the room stayed uncomfortably warm overnight.
