Schmied von Kochel Hotel

The bathroom was just okay, and the low toilet and bathtub shower really weren't good enough for how expensive this place is. Breakfast wasn't good either. In the room, the old TV had very few channels, and many didn't work. At check-in, a sign directed us to the restaurant, where an older woman brought us to what they called reception: a very messy table with a huge curved monitor sitting on top. This is probably the worst hotel in town.

The hotel is only five minutes from the train station and about ten minutes from beautiful Kochelsee. You can also have lunch and dinner there. We stayed two winter nights because it was the cheapest option among the hotels, and had two rooms for some reason, so there was plenty of space. The room was a little cold, so bring warm clothes, socks, and shoes. Breakfast didn't have much variety, but was good enough to get the day started.

We were four people and everyone was happy with their soups, mains, and desserts. The meals were tasty and very well prepared, with a wide selection to choose from. The atmosphere was cozy, and the multilingual staff were really friendly. It was good value and a nice change from eating in Munich, especially after a day at the lakes or in the mountains.

There was easy parking, and the Bavarian decor was lovely. Dinner service was efficient, and although I was wary of the large menu, that concern turned out to be unfounded. The food was excellent, piping hot, and served promptly, with classic Bavarian dishes and seasonal specials made from good quality ingredients. The price was very reasonable for the quality. I made a point of going to the kitchen door to thank the chef. The Käseknödelsuppe and roast goose were delicious.
